Garrett Ace 250 Review

Introduction

The Garrett Ace 250 is a very versatile metal detector. It is a light weight metal detector that will not tire you out in the field. If you are not familier with the Garrett Ace line of detectors, you will be amazed at all the features they have on these machines. The Ace 250 has some exciting features that any detectorist will love at a very reasonable price. There are many other brands on the market, but Charles Garrett has provided a line of affordable, easy to use detectors. It is newbie friendly and easy to use.It also comes with an owner’s manual and an instructional dvd. This is a great metal detector for the seasoned pro, or the beginner.

LCD Features

The Garrett Ace 250 has a good sized LCD screen for easy viewing. The left side of the screen lists the modes available, the center shows the sensitivity level, and the right side is the depth readings. The depth meter is one of the best features on this metal detector, as you can see how far down your target is. The depth readings on the right of the screen functions while the detectorist is hunting. One thing to keep in mind is the depth readings come in two inch increments and goes to eight inches. There is an  always visible battery life scale so you will know when to change batteries.

Other Features

The discrimination element has eight control levels of sensitivity. There are also 12 discrimination cursors. There is an elimination pad which is used in conjunction with the discrimination element. For example, if you find a nail you can push the elimination pad so you will no longer recieve those signals. The Ace 250 is a sensitive metal detector, so it is wise to use caution when first starting out with this machine. Try testing the sensitivity in the yard with a metal object so you will get a feel of how to use it. If you set it too high, you could lose out on finding some valuables. You will be able to fine tune the discrimination level to what you want the level to be. Press the pad left or right to set the sensitivity level.  Another great feature is the built in pinpointer. This  is a great feature for targeting your find. To use this feature just press and hold the pinpoint tab as you sweep the Ace 250 over your target area.

Modes

You will see five preset modes on the left side of the screen. All-Metal is the first one. It has no discrimination set and will detect al metal. This is a good mode if you are not looking for any certain type of metal. However, you will also find a lot of junk metal, so be prepaired to do a lot of digging. This is also a great mode to use for beach detecting as there are various kinds of metal objects lost in the sand. Jewelry is the second mode. This mode is also useful for detecting at places such as the beach and parks, etc. The Custom mode is the one that saves your discrimination settings. The Relics mode will usually eliminate metals such as foil. It will pick up brass, lead, etc. People use this mode to hunt for civil war relics. Coins is the final mode. This mode will eliminate metal such as foil, pulltabs and iron. Most people use this mode for metal detecting in parks where there tends to be a lot of trash.
